Linux + Netflix Streaming = Fail

April 24, 2009

Every year our user base gets larger and larger but I don’t feel like we are seeing any new support. The new version of Netflix Streaming user Silverlight which allows Mac and Consoles to stream as well as Windows. With this Linux was left in the in the cold. Sure we have Moonlight which is a Open Source version of Silverlight but it doesn’t support DRM and isn’t current.

We need a campaign to start where us users let Netflix know we need these options!!

Review: Revolution OS

April 24, 2009

revon

Last weekend I watched Revolution OS after renting it from Netflix. It is a documentary that looks at the birth of the free software movement by Richard Stallman and goes in to the light history of Linux. They also talk to founders and original employee’s of VA Linux and Red Hat. After watching it for the first 20 minutes they got to Linux Tolvalds who founded the Linux Kernel. The Film also spends a little bit of time talking to the difference of GNU / Linux / Open Source. They also give the drafter of the OSS license a good amount of time, Eric Raymond. It also reminded me about Linux clubs we used to have when I lived in Washington DC. There used to be installfests but now I don’t see to much of that. This is something that needs to come back!

The film is overall very dry material but very interesting. If you are a geek it is a great film but remember it was shot in 2001 so don’t expect to much.

AOTD*: Compiz-Fusion

April 23, 2009

* App Of The Day

Today’s application of the day is Compiz-Fusion which is a graphics card driven desktop compilation software. It allows you to change the way windows and other GUI elements react. With this you can wow even the hardcore Apple fans. The amount of options there are is amazing. Plus being Open Source allows the community to make it great for each distro.

Yet Another Netbook Post (YANP): OCZ Neutrino

April 23, 2009

ocz_neutrino_netbook_1

This Netbook is a neat idea. It is bring your own: HD, Memory and OS. This why you are not pay for a license of an Windows that you don’t need. Of course it is great that you get to pick what you want to put in her. There is not rules. If you want to buy a 60Gig SSD from Intel then go for it. You can also bump the RAM up to 2 gig’s. I am including the NewEgg link so you can price it out with the hardware you want. When I did one it came to $354 with free shipping. Not to bad but you loose bluetooth which the ASUS 1000HE has for 389.

AOTD*: TrueCrypt

April 22, 2009

*App Of The Day

truecrypt

TrueCrypt is OSS that allows you to encrypt pretty much anything. Your home folder, partitions, external HD, and thumb drives. One huge benefit of this software vs. what is offered with external drives now is there is NO backdoor. Your data is always your data unless they spend the 30 years decrypting it.

HowTo: Update with One Command! (8.10 to 9.04)

April 22, 2009

jackalope

So you are using 8.04 or 8.10 but tomorrow 9.04 is releasing and you want some of that hot new Ubuntu action? What are you to do?

Here are a couple of steps to knock that out:

1. Hit ALT-F2 to bring up Run.
2. In the run field enter: update-manager -d
3. Select upgrade for New Distribution Release.
4. Go though Upgrade Manager Pages.

Warning: Any 3rd Party Sources that you have will be disabled and you will need to re-add there newer REPOs (9.04 versions). This could cause issues for already installed 3rd party software and as always please backup before upgrading!

We are on the Eve of the new release of Ubuntu. I think the final release was completed yesterday because when I did my update now on my Test Machine running 9.04 RC there where no new updates. It seems that we are about ready to drop down that mouse whole.
